Maz Doomsville (or Bassy Maz as he was known)
Bass
The "DOOMSVILLE" tag originally came from the name of my old radio show "The Midnight Train To Doomsville" which was taken from the title of a Lee "Scratch" Perry tune on the On-U-Sound label back in the early 90's. It's just kind of stuck with me over the years and I was gonna change the "doomsville" thing for this site cos it suggests some kind of pessimistic outlook unless you know the origin of the name.
Some links to some stuff Maz is doing these days.

Arrived in Sunderland as a student, not a very good one, and immediately became interested in the music scene in Sunderland. Dropped in and out of Uni over the years and never actually completed my environmental studies degrre -no surprises there then.

Got the offer of hosting a show on Wear FM ( pirate revival link )with Bassy Maz. The original show was a half arsed effort called "Wear off the Wall" on a Sunday morning. I then got a pair of technics and took and interest in the new pheomena that was dance music ( an early trip to an acid night at the blue monkey (i think) off me head on mushrooms made me a convert. The show mutated into "The Midnight Train to Doomesville" which Bass Maz and me shared -Maz played dub and I played house and techno. If anyones got a tape of the "Big Space Show" then pass it on please. We also did a forntighlty soundsystem affair at anywhere that would have us called the Big Pig. Jonna was involved in this originally too i think. The Pig Pig name came form Jonna's dog "Liberty" who used to get the name "Pig". Later found out there was an Australian band called Big Pig. In the photo I'm on the left and Maz is on the right. I remember this photo being taken down a back alley opposite the bunker in Sunderland.

Maz and me used to play the Durham Uni (thanks Tops) a fair bit too.
Did various beach parties and house parties throughout the years. The house parties were a bit mental and caused quite a bit of interest with the local boys in blue - your names not down your not getting in. Novelty raffles made sure the parties were lively affairs :-)

Did a few "Bongo Active" Sound System gigs with Bongo Maz (remember sitting in the "Food Pig" trolley? Here's a flyer for that very night).

Had a residency at the "Fat Tuesday" club where I played with some pretty big names of the day including Neil Landstrumm Twitch (from Twitch and Brainstorm fame and more recently Optimo ) There were loads more who I can't remember - there will be a good reason for that. One that Lin has just reminded me about wa Claude Young who was the most amazing DJ I ever saw, I just stood and gawped for his entire set.

I almost forgot but I also had a record shop for a while. This was a bit of a den but a lot of fun. On this photo Bassy Maz is sat on the counter at the far end.

Now 42 I live in France with Lin (former Roughnecks fan) and our two kids Bill and Haz. Now older, balder and fatter than I once was. Still messing about making music on the laptop but mostly not much more than messing about "Oy Vey Oy Vey Its the White Rabbi"
I also like to mess about with images but i'm far from any good at it

I still sometimes look through my scrapbook of Roughneck stuff and wonder what everyone else is up to these days -hence me putting this effort together. I'll publish what i've got as soon as I can get a scanner that works on my gas powered 'puter. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with Roughnecks but I went a bit mad/mentalist towards the end and pulled out.
My input to the Roughneck Sounds' sound was not a great deal to be honest, as all I did was put samples into the music - sounded good though :-)
Stu now runs the Hifi Pig website which you can find at www.hifipig.com
